There's the use of stepmothers in fiction which can be done in two ways...
The stepmother is usually unfairly portrayed all the time as a wicked witch like that in Cindrella, Hansel and Gretel, or Snow White. These stepmothers play extreme favoritism on their biological children while mistreating their stepchildren, and they tend to play nice when their new husband is at home and become wicked witches when the husband is absent. Most like the two faced hypocrites like in the Korean dramas "Stairway to Heaven" as well as "Brilliant Legacy". In the case of "Brilliant Legacy", Sung Hee is portrayed to be more of a tragic villain who finds redemption in the end while in "Stairway to Heaven", Tae Mira gets laser guided karma that lands her in the mental hospital. Overall, these tend to make unfair treatment to stepmothers who aren't like them.
It is quite different in "Madrasta" meaning stepmother to which Sharon Cuneta stars as a stepmother who tries to cling close to her stepchildren as if they are her own showing that stepmothers aren't always evil. In the case of my friend, his stepmother treats him as her own son even if she was born out of wedlock.
While stepmothers are usually known to be the one who comes after the biological mother, not before (ex. a child born out of wedlock gets adopted by his stepmother, a second wife after the first wife dies or is divorced) there is the other type of stepmother who is called the "big mother" though the layman's term still uses stepmother creating confusion to the use of the term. Big mother refers to the father's wife of an illegitimate child born AFTER the marriage, not before. In Chinese tradition, this was used in the polygynous setting where the first wife is addressed as such or in the monogamous society, to the illegitimate child of the husband born by the third party.
