My Journey Of The Plot VS. Pretty Girls In Watching TV Shows

It's known that I tend to watch shows for the pretty girls. I would find myself asking, "Am I watching something for the plot or the pretty girl?" That question would often nag my head -- A LOT! I felt like rambling this because of the upcoming Miss Universe pageant. It's no secret that I've admired the beauty of Olivia Jordan and Catriona M. Gray. I'd like to think about my struggle of The Plot vs. the Pretty Girl in why I watch certain shows.

Between Super Sentai and Power Rangers

It's no secret that I watched Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers as a child. It wasn't just because it was one of the cool things to do in the 1990s. It was also because I had that crush on Kimberly Hart! I watched Mighty Morphin' back then because I found Kimberly THAT PRETTY. However, things simply started to go downhill (for me, at least) when I discovered that Power Rangers was a licensed adaptation of Super Sentai. Yes, that's why I don't like it when a certain group keeps calling it bootleg! I discovered Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and watched some of its episodes. I didn't find Reiko Chiba all that pretty. I found her cute but not all that spectacular. Kimberly was still that blazing FOR ME -- even today!

It might be just some biases kicking in. Watching Zyuranger made me think, "Mighty Morphin' should've just ended!" Toei decided to produce footage for Saban-only use. Toei wanted to get more money out of the American market at that time. The toys sold so fast, there were long lines, and Toei was striking while the iron was hot. However, Power Rangers soon got into the yearly cast change since Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. Zyuranger ended as planned. What's even better is that I don't have to watch the any Super Sentai series in their chronological order -- just to understand the next season! That's another reason why I dislike the Zordon Era. Why would I need to watch everything starting from Mighty Morphin' just to understand what happened in Power Rangers in Space

Some of the Super Sentai girls are prettier than the Power Rangers counterparts IMHO. Sure, Power Rangers SPD was dubbed in Japan by their counterparts nonetheless. I could care less if some people preferred SPD though Tokosou Sentai Dekaranger has a huge role. Dekaranger was the first series to get fully fansubbed before the official DVD release. I watched Dekaranger before only because I found Marika "Jasmine" Reimon that pretty. I had the same reaction when checking out other Super Sentai past 2001 -- I really found a lot of the Super Sentai girls prettier than their Power Rangers counterparts!

I find Nanami Nono of Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger prettier than blonde girl Tori Hanson in Power Rangers Ninja Storm. I saw Ninja Storm first and I just watched it out of curiosity. I find Sakura Nishihori of Gougou Sentai Boukenger prettier than Rose Ortiz of Power Ranger Operation Overdrive. Those are but some examples and I found myself in shallow appreciation. I had to look into other aspects such as plot, writing, and acting. Right now, I feel Operation Overdrive could've been better BUT the ridiculously short run was a huge minus. Fortunately, Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger took the Corona Aurora and fixed it!

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger is a good show with loads of eye candy. Yes, I watched Power Rangers Megaforce because of the chicks but became forgettable! It's not about Ciara Hanna and Christina Masterson but the show's THINNER THAN PAPER DEVELOPMENT. It was fortunate that I dropped Megaforce like a hot potato. I had a dumb excuse during Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger -- I find theme repetition annoying! I didn't find Amy Yuzuki or Yayoi Ulshade my type. I didn't find most of the newer females that attractive. The girls of Shuriken Sentai Ninninger are hotter than Power Rangers Ninja Steel -- but that show's still a dumpster fire! Doubotsu Sentai Zyuohger had pretty females but I think the show was just an anniversary -- for the sake of an anniversary! Both Ninninger and Zyuohger are beautifully pointless -- leading me to appreciate Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters all the more!

Speaking of which, I ended up appreciating Go-Busters more after watching Power Rangers Beast Morphers. Once again, it's not the cast but the script. It's no secret that I find Zoey Reeves prettier than Yoko Usami. I never found Arisa Komiya attractive compared to Jacqueline Scislowski. However, the huge amounts of Power Rangers throwbacks and nostalgia was too much. It's because I feel that Power Rangers is still trying to be "Go Go Power Rangers" all over again. The finale had the Beast Morphers Rangers use the Legendary Weapons and for what? More fanservice and throwbacks? It was too predictable that Evox was Venjix all along. The throwbacks could'v worked if it was simply focused on Power Rangers RPM. The Morph-X idea sounds cool on paper. I feel like they could've just made ZERO reference to the Morphin' Grid and stated a new energy source instead. Come on, it's not the 1990s anymore!

I didn't want to confess it before. I find Hunter Deno prettier than Ichika Osaki. I trashed Kishinryu Sentai Ryusoulger as another bad show. What's with Toei thinking of making a fourth dinosaur Super Sentai barely after 10 years from 2013?! Every company has its own series of mistakes -- such as when Hasbro created the toy massacre of a movie called Transformers: The Movie and the TV series after it. I find Amelia Jones to be prettier than Asuna. I came to the conclusion that I'm not rewatching Ryusoulger just because I don't like Dino Fury. I feel Ryusoulger might've even beaten Ninninger in the dumpster fire department! It's a good thing I skipped both Power Rangers Dino Fury and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury

Dino Fury doesn't even seek to get out of the 1990s narrative. As I love to say it -- it's NOT the 1990s anymore! Just because Power Rangers caused a craze back then -- doesn't mean it will still cause a craze now! Some companies get so intoxicated with past successes they don't bother to evolve. The same goes for franchises. In terms of plot -- I'd probably give some "credit" to Ryusoulger. Ryusoulger didn't randomly just bring in the Black Cross Fuhrer from Himitsu Sentai Goranger without a good reason. It didn't even make mention of the Super Sentai Strongets Battle within the show's continuity. Instead, Super Sentai Strongest Battle remained as a non-canon mini-series! I feel Black Cross Fuhrer returning in Ryusoulger would completely get newer audiences lost!

What I realized was that not all Super Sentai series I enjoyed had blazing women. I don't find the women in Choshinsei Flashman pretty. My first pink ranger crush Hikaru Katsuragi (dubbed as Kimberly) in Chodenshi Bioman wasn't that pretty for me. Chojuu Sentai Liveman's Megumi Misaki isn't all that pretty to me. However, Liveman has had more plot than Hurricanger. I don't find Matsuri Tatsumi of Kyukyu Sentai GoGoFive or Yuuri from Mirai Sentai Timeranger blazing. However, both GoGoFive and Timeranger are series that I enjoy FOR THE PLOT!

The same goes between teleseryes and East Asian dramas

I wouldn't deny that I watched Chinese drama (China and Taiwan), Japanese drama, and recently I'm more into Korean dramas. What I'm not going to deny is that I tend to watch shows for the eye candy. That can be quickly overridden with a good plot. Sure, I watched some Korean dramas because of the attractive female lead. However, a good plot will always overtake the appearance of anyone! I watched Kill It and Justice because Jin A Nana looks like Shaina Magdayao. However, I've only admired Shaina's face but the teleseryes are just plain WTF. I watched Vincenzo because Jeon Yeo Bin looks line Angel Locsin. However, I didn't watch most teleseryes with Angel in them!

However, not all Chinese, Japanese, or Korean telenovelas have pretty ladies to behold. I confess that I never found Barbie Xu pretty at all!| I watched Lavender because I found Tammy Chen pretty. Recently, I find myself in a strange obsession with Shin Hye Sun. I don't find Hye Sun pretty. There are times I think Hye Sun is ugly but I think she's just plain -- not pretty. I've watched some other dramas because of the captivating plot.

I'd admit that I find a lot of teleserye actresses pretty. I find Shaina more attractive than Nana. However, the engaging plot in Kill It and Justice ultimately prevails over appearances of all sorts. Nana's characters in both shows make it clear -- beauty is just a bonus! What makes the show good is not the pretty face but the plot. I don't find Hye Sun pretty but her good acting (which I think is better than Nana's) and the projects she gets -- make it easy to fall for her. I found Mr. Queen engaging even if I don't find Hye Sun to be pretty.

And probably why I'm not so keen on American entertainment these days

I might blame my dislike of Power Rangers on my dislike of most American shows. I've had issues with a lot of simple-mindedness from several American shows. I used to adore America too much when I was younger. I had an on/off hatred for things American. I thought about American films and the like too.

There are some pretty American actresses. However, a lot of American shows tend to drive me bored. It should be sad but a lot of American media can be rather anti-intellectual or overly toned down. I'm disappointed at how a lot of American shows can promote nonsense. I'd blame it on the prevalence of anti-intellectualism. It's probable because America got too drunk with success for a long time. I'd also mention how Disney and Nickelodeon suck these days. Nothing's wrong with enjoying a good laugh. However, Spongebob Squarepants is a show that should've been canceled after the movie. The same goes for a lot of shows that run for too long.

There are several pretty actresses. However, if the show or film is terrible THEN IT'S TERRIBLE. No amount of eye candy can save it. Bad writing, bad acting, etc. can't be covered up with eye candy.
